One of our favorite meals in Dublin came tucked beside the River Liffey at The Woollen Mills, a warm and lively eating house just steps from the iconic Ha’penny Bridge. Recommended to us by our walking tour guide, it quickly became the kind of place where you want to linger long after the plates have been cleared. The atmosphere struck that perfect balance between cozy and bustling, with softly glowing lights, the murmur of conversation, and the comforting aroma of freshly baked bread drifting through the historic building.

What makes this spot feel especially Dublin is its remarkable history. The building itself has been part of the city for well over a century and once operated as a bustling woollen merchant and textile hub where none other than James Joyce worked in his younger years. Today, the four-story space has been lovingly transformed into a restaurant that still feels deeply connected to Dublin’s heritage, blending old-world character with modern Irish cuisine.

We stopped in for a leisurely lunch after a morning of wandering Dublin’s cobbled streets and immediately understood why so many locals and guides recommend it. The menu celebrates locally sourced Irish ingredients with comforting dishes that feel both traditional and contemporary. Depending on the season, you might find hearty soups, fresh seafood, brown bread still warm from the bakery, or beautifully prepared vegetables sourced from Irish farms. Sitting near the windows overlooking the river made the meal feel even more atmospheric as the city drifted by outside.

The Woollen Mills captures that distinctly Irish sense of hospitality — relaxed, welcoming, and wonderfully unpretentious. Whether you stop in for brunch, lunch, or dinner, it feels like the kind of place woven into Dublin’s story. Definitely one to add to your Dublin wanderings.
