MEET JACQUELINE

A life shaped
by curiosity,
movement,
and stories.

Hi, I’m Jacqueline, a devoted wanderer, lifelong reader, and firm believer that the best way to truly know a place is to walk it.

I grew up in a mixed-heritage family outside Atlanta and, in my twenties, packed everything I owned into an old Toyota and drove west. Somewhere along the way, I fell in love with California and made the San Francisco Bay Area my home. That cross-country journey marked the beginning of a life shaped by curiosity, movement, and a desire to understand the many stories that make us who we are.

It is that interest in people and their stories that eventually led me to become a clinical social worker. My work has allowed me to witness both the humanity and resilience of people from many different places and backgrounds. It has taught me to listen closely, look beyond the surface, and appreciate how history, culture, and personal experience shape the way we move through the world. Those same instincts guide the way I travel.

FINDING THE WAY FORWARD

Walking opened
the world again.

In my thirties, my own understanding of resilience became more personal when I went through cancer treatment. After months in which my life revolved around appointments, procedures, and recovery, walking offered a gentle way to reconnect with my body and the world beyond illness. At first, the destination mattered less than the simple act of moving forward. A walk could quiet my mind, restore my confidence, and remind me to notice what was still beautiful and possible.

As my strength returned, walking began to open the world to me again. Travel and reading became part of that renewal, too. I have loved books since childhood, and they allowed me to journey when my physical world felt small. Later, travel gave me the chance to experience unfamiliar places with a renewed sense of gratitude and presence. Since then, I have traveled to 20 countries and counting, exploring vibrant cities, historic neighborhoods, coastal paths, mountain trails, and the hidden corners that reveal themselves only when we slow down.

THE IDEA BEHIND THE PATHS

Travel that begins with
attention.
These experiences are at the heart of Adventurous Ambles, a travel blog for those who crave a deeper connection to the world. For me, travel isn’t about rushing from landmark to landmark. It’s about noticing the rhythm of a place: footsteps echoing along a cobblestone street at sunrise, the scent of rain on a coastal trail, or the hum of a local market beginning to stir. Walking invites a kind of presence that transforms a destination into an experience, one that unfolds gradually, richly, and often unexpectedly.

That experience becomes even more meaningful when we understand the stories beneath the scenery. Every journey begins long before I lace up my shoes, often with a book that helps me see a destination more fully. A novel can bring a neighborhood to life; a memoir can open a window into experiences different from our own; and history can give meaning to buildings, landscapes, and traditions we might otherwise pass without understanding.

FEATURED READING – ON WALKING

Wanderlust

A History of Walking

REBECCA SOLNIT

Part cultural history and part philosophical journey, Wanderlust explores how walking has shaped our cities, politics, imaginations, and inner lives. Solnit follows the path from ancient pilgrimages and Romantic wandering to protest marches and solitary walks, showing how the simple act of moving on foot can create space for freedom, reflection, discovery, and connection.

WHY READ IT?

This thoughtful book is a natural companion for anyone who believes a walk is more than a way to get somewhere. It is an invitation to slow down, pay attention, and consider what becomes possible when we move through the world at a human pace.

ONE STEP AND ONE STORY

Walking and
reading belong
together.

The connection between walking and reading is what inspired Adventurous Ambles. Here, you’ll find thoughtfully crafted itineraries, walking routes, hike recommendations, travel insights, and curated reading lists designed to deepen your experience of a place before, during, and after your journey.

More than anything, this is a space for travelers who value curiosity over checklists, connection over speed, and the stories behind the scenery. It is an invitation to move more intentionally, travel more thoughtfully, and see the world through both your footsteps and your imagination.

Take your time, follow your curiosity, and come along. There’s a whole world waiting to be discovered, one step and one story at a time.
