A Bibliophile’s Paradise in Bali

Tucked into the heart of central Ubud, Ganesha Book Shop felt like one of those wonderful discoveries I’m always hoping to make while traveling. Part cultural archive, part community hub, and part literary sanctuary, this independent bookstore immediately invited me to slow down, explore its narrow aisles, and lose myself among stories connected to Bali and Indonesia.

The shelves were thoughtfully filled with both new and well-loved books, with an especially rich selection devoted to Indonesian and Balinese culture. I found titles exploring mythology, architecture, traditional healing, art, and local history. Many were available in English translation, making the collection wonderfully accessible to international visitors like me.

This is the kind of bookstore where one discovery naturally leads to another. Before I knew it, I was tracing connections between Bali’s past and present, scanning beautifully illustrated maps, and picking up slim volumes of poetry I hadn’t known I needed. There was always the possibility that the next shelf might hold a rare or out-of-print title.

Beyond books, the shop carried music CDs, art prints, handcrafted keepsakes, stationery, and journals. I especially loved the journals, which felt perfect for recording the small observations and memories that gather during a trip.

One of my favorite discoveries was the shop’s secondhand book program. Travelers can choose a gently used title, take it along on their journey, and return it after finishing it to receive 50 percent of the purchase price back. For someone trying to travel light, it’s a brilliant idea. It keeps stories circulating, makes reading more sustainable, and creates room in your bag for the next discovery.

What stayed with me most, however, was the heart behind the shop. Ganesha Book Shop collects and distributes children’s books in Indonesian and English, supporting schools, literacy programs, and mobile libraries across Bali. Knowing that the shop helps stories travel beyond its own shelves made my purchase feel even more meaningful.

A Literary Link to Ubud’s Creative Spirit

Ubud has long drawn artists, writers, and curious travelers, and that creative spirit is easy to feel inside Ganesha. Many of the authors represented on its shelves have connections to the internationally known Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, held each October.

During the festival, Ubud becomes an energetic literary gathering place for writers, journalists, poets, and thinkers from around the world. The program includes panel discussions, book launches, storytelling sessions, workshops, and cultural performances. Conversations often explore identity, history, politics, the environment, and storytelling traditions, offering visitors a deeper perspective on Indonesia and the wider world.

I can only imagine how special it would be to time a visit with the festival: beginning the morning with an inspiring author talk, spending the afternoon browsing the shelves at Ganesha, and ending the evening with a live reading or performance beneath the tropical sky.

For me, Ganesha Book Shop was much more than a place to buy a book. It was a quiet doorway into Bali’s culture, creativity, and community. And the sort of place I could happily revisit every time I returned to Ubud.
